Standing with the Iranian People: The Urgency of Supporting Protests Against the Regime

Iran is currently experiencing violent protests in Tehran, with women risking execution for defying the regime. The Trump administration has made promises to support the Iranian people, but there is hesitation in taking action. The Iranian regime, led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been brutal towards its population and sponsors terrorism. Despite the atrocities, the international left remains silent, failing to show solidarity with the Iranian protesters. This selective morality is evident in other global conflicts as well, where certain atrocities receive more attention than others.
The Tudeh Party, Iran's communist left, condemns the protests and blames American imperialism. Some progressive Iranian American academics dismiss calls for change as Westernized and illegitimate. The international order, based on state sovereignty, has shielded oppressive regimes. The U.S. must support the Iranian people's right to choose their government, impose targeted sanctions, provide humanitarian aid, support communication infrastructure for protesters, and build diplomatic coalitions to oppose the regime.
Failure to act decisively will embolden authoritarian regimes and undermine American credibility. However, by supporting the Iranian people in removing the mullahs, the U.S. can uphold moral principles in international affairs and demonstrate a commitment to freedom and human dignity. The time for action is now, and history will judge the choices made in this critical moment.
