Trinity Rodman Signs Historic Three-Year Contract with Washington Spirit, Becomes Highest-Paid Player in NWSL History

The Washington Spirit has re-signed Trinity Rodman, a star forward and member of the US Women’s National Team, to a groundbreaking three-year contract worth over $2 million annually. This deal makes Rodman the highest-paid player in the history of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the highest-paid female player globally. The contract extension through 2028 ensures Rodman remains with the Spirit and prevents her from pursuing more lucrative offers overseas due to the league’s salary cap constraints.

Rodman expressed her commitment to the Spirit, stating that she considers the team her family and is excited about the future of the club. The 23-year-old forward's previous contract with the Spirit expired at the end of 2025, making her a free agent. Despite attempts to negotiate a new deal and dissuade her from leaving for Europe, the Spirit faced challenges due to salary cap restrictions.

The NWSL Players Association filed grievances against the league, including one opposing the rejection of a backloaded contract that would have paid Rodman over $1 million per season. Additionally, the association challenged the new "High Impact Player" rule, which allows clubs to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million to sign key players like Rodman. This rule, dubbed the "Trinity Rodman rule," has sparked controversy within the league.

Rodman's impressive career in the NWSL includes scoring 33 goals and providing 21 assists in 109 games across all competitions. She made history as the youngest player in the league to reach 50 career goal contributions. Winning the NWSL league championship with Washington in 2021 and an Olympic gold medal in 2024, Rodman has solidified her status as a top talent in women's soccer.

Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang emphasized the significance of Rodman's decision to continue her career with the club, highlighting her as a generational player and a symbol of the future of women's soccer. The Spirit aims to build a championship-contending team that fosters excellence and provides a platform for elite players like Rodman to thrive long-term. Rodman's choice to stay in Washington reflects the club's commitment to creating a sustainable and successful environment for top-tier athletes.
