Fatal Shooting of American Citizen by Federal Immigration Agents Sparks Controversy in Minneapolis
A fatal shooting involving federal immigration agents from Customs and Border Protection occurred in Minneapolis, resulting in the death of a 37-year-old American citizen named Alex Jeffrey Pretti. The man, identified as an intensive care nurse, was reported to have had a firearm and two magazines. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara stated that the man was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry, and his only prior interaction with law enforcement was related to traffic violations. The incident unfolded during a targeted operation against an individual wanted for violent assault, where the man allegedly approached officers with a handgun and resisted their attempts to disarm him, leading to the fatal shooting.
Despite efforts to provide first aid, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as confirmed by officials. Video footage captured the altercation between officers and the individual before shots were fired. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino emphasized that the agent resorted to firing defensive shots due to feeling threatened for his life and the safety of his colleagues. The incident sparked protests in the area, with clashes between demonstrators and federal officers, resulting in the declaration of an unlawful assembly.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief O'Hara called for calm following the shooting, urging an end to federal operations in Minnesota. Mayor Frey criticized the use of force by federal agents and questioned the necessity of such operations, emphasizing the need to prioritize American values and safety. Governor Tim Walz also condemned the shooting, urging the President to halt the operation and remove the officers from Minnesota. This tragic event marks the second fatal shooting involving immigration officials in Minneapolis this month, highlighting the ongoing tensions and concerns surrounding law enforcement actions in the city.
