Winter Storm Safety: PennDOT Speed Limit Reductions and Vehicle Restrictions in Philadelphia Region

Due to the winter storm, PennDOT has reduced the speed limit on various roadways in the Philadelphia region. Tier 4 Vehicle Restrictions are in place on all interstates, and motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Speeds have been reduced to 45 mph on specific highways, including Interstates 76, 95, 295, 476, 676, U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422, and State Routes 63, 100 Spur, and 309. Vehicle restrictions are in effect for commercial vehicles, school buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs, and passenger vehicles towing trailers on affected roadways.

PennDOT advises motorists to slow down, turn on headlights, stay in their lane, increase following distance, and avoid distractions when driving in snow squalls or blowing snow. They should also use defrosters and wipers, keep windows and mirrors clear, and come to a complete stop only when safe during whiteouts. Motorists are urged to buckle up, never drive impaired, and have an emergency kit in their vehicles. Last winter, Pennsylvania saw numerous crashes, fatalities, and injuries on snowy or icy roads, with many incidents involving speeding and lack of seat belt use.

PennDOT crews are working to keep roadways passable during the storm, but roads may not be completely free of ice and snow. Motorists are encouraged to avoid traveling during winter storms and can check road conditions on 511PA, which provides real-time traffic information, weather forecasts, and access to traffic cameras. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways until conditions improve, and motorists should prioritize safety and caution when driving in winter weather.
