From Ashes to Art: The Stained Glass Tribute to Burned-Out Porsches

After the devastating fires last year, many homes were reduced to rubble, leaving only cars standing on the lots. These cars, once cherished possessions, were either untouched or severely damaged, crushed by debris, burned, and covered in toxic dust. Over 6,000 cars were destroyed in the Pacific Palisades area, ranging from daily commuters to showpiece vehicles that represented owners' love for classic automotive design.
Ben Tuna, a car enthusiast and stained glass artist, was inspired by the wreckage of burned-out Porsches from the fires. Starting in March 2025, he transformed these car shells into cathedral-like creations using salvaged stained glass from old churches. Tuna's intention was to pay tribute to the loss experienced by collectors and enthusiasts who lost their prized possessions in the fires.
Moved by the images of cars being towed away and the stories of loss, Tuna embarked on a mission to create something beautiful from the devastation. He obtained five burned-out Porsches, with four coming from a collector's garage in the Palisades. Despite the cars' condition after the fires, Tuna saw them as iconic pieces of design and wished he could have saved more from destruction.
Tuna's first post-fire project was a 1965 Porsche 356, which he transformed into a 700-pound movable sculpture. Working with salvaged stained glass from decommissioned churches, Tuna and his team meticulously assembled the glass pieces to create a unique artwork that honored the design legacies of both the cars and the stained glass windows. Each car project is a labor of love and a tribute to the forgotten beauty of the stained glass windows.
While Tuna's car creations are still in progress, his ultimate goal is to showcase all seven pieces in a gallery show. Visitors who have seen the artwork so far, including the owner of the salvaged cars, have been moved to tears by the reverence and beauty of the pieces. Tuna believes that even in the face of loss and devastation, there is still the potential to create something good and meaningful.
In conclusion, Ben Tuna's artful transformation of burned-out Porsches into stained glass masterpieces serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and beauty that can emerge from tragedy. Each car project is a symbol of remembrance and a testament to the enduring spirit of creativity and hope in the face of loss.
