Netflix's Spanish Content Expansion: From Serial Killers to Tennis Legends

Netflix has recently announced new Spanish content additions to its platform, including a feature documentary about the murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco, a miniseries centered around a serial killer, and a feature film by Oriol Paulo. The streaming service has been investing heavily in Spanish-language content, with Spain being a significant driver of subscriptions.

One of the new shows, titled Lobo, stars Luis Tosar and Tristán Ulloa and is based on the real-life case of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, Spain's first documented serial killer. The miniseries, written by Alberto Marini and Juan Galiñanes, is currently in production and explores the story of a traveling tailor who claimed to be a werewolf during his trial.

Netflix has also commissioned a documentary film titled Miguel Ángel Blanco: Las 48 Horas que lo Cambiaron Todo, which delves into the two days leading up to the murder of politician Miguel Ángel Blanco by the separatist group ETA in 1997. Directed by Jon Sistiaga and Juanjo López, the doc sheds light on the events that mobilized millions of people in Spain.

Another upcoming project is the film En Nombre de Otro, directed by filmmaker Paulo and starring Eduard Fernández, Mario Casas, Blanca Suárez, Nicolás Francella, and Alexandra Jiménez. Described as a fast-paced thriller where nothing is as it seems, the production is currently underway.

During a presentation in Madrid, stars and executives of the new titles took the stage to introduce their projects, including The Final Problem, Gracias, Equipo, Salvador, Murder in Galicia, The Child, Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, 53 Sundays, and A Day Like No Other. The event showcased the diverse range of upcoming Spanish content on Netflix.

In addition to the announced projects, Netflix is also working on a documentary about Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal, titled Rafa. The film will follow the final stage of Nadal's playing career, as he retired in 2024 after an illustrious career that included 20 Grand Slam titles and a reputation as the King of Clay. Directed by Zachary Heinzerling, the documentary is produced by Skydance Sports.
