Remembering Gary McSpadden: A Gospel Music Icon's Journey

January 25 marks the birth of Gary McSpadden in Magnum, Oklahoma in 1943. He started his singing career as a teenager and became a member of the Oak Ridge Boys and later the Imperials, who backed Elvis Presley. McSpadden also ventured into hosting Christian TV shows and producing award-winning gospel albums.

As a child, McSpadden sang in church and began singing solos at the age of 10. He joined the Oak Ridge Quartet at the age of 18 and later became part of the Oak Ridge Boys. During his time with the group, he recorded three albums showcasing his baritone vocals.

After leaving the Oak Ridge Boys, McSpadden joined Jake Hess and the Imperials, where he served as a backup singer for Elvis Presley. Following his departure from the Imperials, he co-pastored a church with his father in Texas.

In 1977, McSpadden joined the Bill Gaither Trio and later became a founding member of the Gaither Vocal Band. Alongside his group memberships, he pursued a solo career, releasing multiple albums and devotional projects.

McSpadden also made a mark as a producer, working on Dove Award-winning albums for various artists. He appeared on and hosted faith-based television shows, including Jim Bakker's PTL Club and The Gary McSpadden Show, which featured gospel music and sermons.

Additionally, McSpadden hosted live music shows in Branson, Missouri, focusing on gospel themes. He passed away in April 2020 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after battling pancreatic cancer.
