Michigan High School Athletes Embrace New Personal Branding Opportunities with Expanded PBA/NIL Approval
Michigan high school athletes in the state now have the opportunity to expand their personal brand through the approval of an expansion of personal brand activities (PBA) by the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association. This expansion, also known as Name-Image-Likeness (NIL), allows student-athletes to profit off their NIL effective immediately. The MHSAA announced this decision on Tuesday, opening up new PBA opportunities for student-athletes.
Previously, student-athletes were limited to engaging in certain PBA activities like conducting camps, clinics, and private lessons. The new initiative will introduce additional PBA opportunities for student-athletes, while ensuring that these activities do not impact competitive equity resulting from group activities or pay-for-play opportunities.
The MHSAA has been discussing PBA/NIL for the past three years, with potential rule changes being considered after the Michigan Legislature proposed a state law in 2023 in support of providing NIL to high school student-athletes. MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl emphasized the importance of individual branding opportunities for student-athletes while excluding collectives, boosters, and school personnel from involvement in these activities.
Student-athletes can now promote their brand through various avenues such as autograph signings, social media endorsements, promotions, and advertising. However, school names and jerseys are prohibited from being involved in any PBA activity, and these activities cannot take place on school grounds or during school events. Coaches are also not allowed to conduct any PBA opportunities on behalf of student-athletes.
The MHSAA is committed to upholding competitive equity and will take any attempts to break or blur this rule seriously. Clear language and guidance have been provided to assist schools in navigating this evolving landscape. For more information on the policy, visit the MHSAA website.
