Houston Residents Voice Concerns Over City's Collaboration with ICE at City Council Meeting

Houston residents expressed their concerns at a recent Houston City Council meeting regarding the city's collaboration with ICE agents. The meeting was packed with concerned citizens who wanted to address the issue following recent fatal incidents involving federal agents in Minneapolis. Despite the high turnout, not everyone who signed up to speak was able to do so due to long wait times for screening and entry into the chamber hall. Some residents criticized Mayor John Whitmire for what they perceive as a lack of effort in opposing ICE's presence in Houston, citing the impact on immigrant communities.
Residents at the meeting shared their fear and frustration over the recent ICE-related shooting deaths in Minnesota and expressed the real fear experienced by immigrant communities. Mayor Whitmire has stated that Houston's ability to resist ICE is limited due to a state law passed in 2017 that restricts local governments from prohibiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The city council meeting, which was scheduled to end at 9 p.m., concluded more than two hours early, leaving several individuals who wanted to speak unable to do so.
