Browns' Coaching Controversy: Todd Monken's Hiring Sparks Tension Among Defensive Staff and Players

The Cleveland Browns have made a surprising move by hiring Todd Monken, the former offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, as their new head coach. This decision has caused some frustration among the team's defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz, who was passed over for the position. Myles Garrett, the defensive end, also seemed to question the choice of Monken as the new head coach. Monken and Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase were among the finalists for the job, with Monken ultimately being selected for the role.

Last year, the Browns drafted quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders with hopes of securing a future franchise quarterback. Sanders emerged as the starting quarterback by the end of the season and even received a Pro Bowl nomination. While Sanders has the potential to continue as the starter in Cleveland in 2026, it appears that he was not a significant factor in the coaching search process conducted by the organization.

Chase Daniels, during an appearance on the "Scoop City" podcast, mentioned that Shedeur Sanders was not a major factor in the Browns' decision to hire Todd Monken as the head coach. Sanders, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft, could benefit from Monken's coaching next season. However, it remains to be seen if the new head coach will opt to bring in another quarterback to enhance the team's competitiveness in the AFC North division.

In his rookie season, Sanders played in eight games, throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also contributed 169 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. The Browns' quarterback situation will be one to watch as they prepare for the upcoming season under the guidance of Todd Monken. For more updates on the Browns and the NFL, visit Newsweek Sports.
