JBJ Soul Kitchen Pop-Up Cafe in Toms River Extends Service Amid Community Support and Criticism

Despite serving over 13,500 meals to individuals in need, the initiative faced criticism from Toms River Mayor Dan Rodrick, who referred to it as a "soup kitchen." However, the pop-up received strong advocacy from library staff, community partners, and local residents, leading to the approval of the extension. The site has been a source of support for approximately 40 long-term unhoused individuals, providing essential care and referrals to service providers.
The JBJ Soul Kitchen Pop-Up has been praised by local residents for its compassionate approach to addressing food insecurity and homelessness in the community. The location, open on Tuesdays through Fridays, offers a safe space for individuals without homes to seek shelter during freezing conditions. The pop-up staff and volunteers have distributed hygiene kits, made referrals to service providers, and facilitated housing placements and employment opportunities for those in need.
Dorothea Bongiovi, the founder of JBJ Soul Kitchen, expressed her gratitude to the downtown Toms River community for embracing the Soul Kitchen model. The JBJ Soul Kitchen initiative, which started in Red Bank in 2011, has expanded to include The B.E.A.T. Center in Toms River, offering a choice food pantry and culinary training program. The program has also extended to Rutgers University-Newark and New Jersey City University, addressing food insecurity among students and providing essential support to those in need. The commitment to kindness, dignity, and respect for all individuals has been a driving force behind the success of the JBJ Soul Kitchen initiative.
