Pat Benatar: A Resilient Pop-Rock Icon of the 80s

Pat Benatar was a resilient pop-rock artist who maintained success throughout the 80s. Despite changing musical trends, she continued to produce hits without following the crowd. Her ability to adapt songs to her style was evident in her last Top 40 hit in the US before taking a break from the music scene.

Having entered the US Top 40 in 1979 with "Heartbreaker," Benatar gained momentum heading into the 80s. She became a reliable artist on pop radio, often performing songs written specifically for her or covering existing tracks. Her exceptional performances often overshadowed previous versions of the songs she covered.

Throughout her career, Benatar faced challenges from record executives but remained loyal to her label, Chrysalis. By the mid-80s, she sensed her time as a pop star was waning. However, she had one more hit up her sleeve with the release of the album "Wide Awake In Dreamland" in 1988, featuring the lead single "All Fired Up."

The song "All Fired Up" was originally performed by Kerryn Tolhurst's band Rattling Sabres. Benatar and her drummer adjusted the lyrics to suit her style, resulting in a successful rendition that reached No. 19 on the US charts. Following the birth of her child, Benatar shifted her focus away from mainstream pop music, exploring blues with her album "True Love" in 1991, marking the end of her chart-topping career.
