Update on Potential Compensation for Waspi Women: Awaited Announcement from Work and Pensions Secretary

An announcement regarding potential compensation for Waspi women is anticipated soon, with Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden set to provide an update to the Commons. The Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) group has been advocating for redress due to the way state pension changes were communicated. Following a review of a policy not to compensate women born in the 1950s, there is no guarantee that compensation will be granted. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman's report suggested individual compensation ranging from £1,000 to £2,950 for those affected by the communication of state pension changes. However, the Government previously stated that a blanket compensation scheme costing up to £10.5 billion could not be justified. Waspi Chair Angela Madden emphasized the need for fair compensation and urged the Government to address the issue promptly. Members of Parliament and the public have shown support for justice for 1950s-born women, and the Government's decision on compensation is eagerly awaited. If fair compensation is not provided, the Government may face significant backlash from the public.
