Kris Kristofferson's Final Live Show: A Tribute to an Iconic Career

Kris Kristofferson performed his final live show in 2020, featuring a setlist of his iconic songs from his illustrious career. The show, which took place on Jan. 30, 2020, aboard the Norwegian Pearl during the Outlaw Country Cruise, was backed by Merle Haggard's band, the Strangers, and included covers of Haggard's songs along with Kristofferson's hits. Several artists influenced by Kristofferson, such as Lucinda Williams, Shooter Jennings, and Steve Earle, paid tribute to him during the cruise. The show concluded with a group rendition of "Why Me" led by Kristofferson himself.
Despite a few subsequent appearances, including at Willie Nelson's 2023 birthday celebration, Kristofferson's last full set was at this show. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including inductions into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2016, he was honored with the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction, and in 2019, he received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Country Music Association.
In a surprising turn of events, Kristofferson announced his retirement in 2020 through a press release in January 2021. Sadly, Kris Kristofferson passed away on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at the age of 88. The cause of his death has not been disclosed, but his family shared the news with fans in a statement. The setlist from his final show included some of his most beloved songs, such as "Me and Bobby McGee," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down."
