Revitalizing the Canadian Screen Awards: A New Era of Collaboration and Innovation

Awards shows have been experiencing a decline in viewership in recent years, including the Canadian Screen Awards. To combat this trend, the Canadian Screen Awards has partnered with major broadcasters CBC, Bell Media, and Corus to broadcast the final prize-giving for the 2026 awards simultaneously on May 31 from Toronto. The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has arranged for the CSAs to be aired and streamed on various platforms, including CBC, CBC Gem, Crave, CTV, Global Television, and StackTV. The collaboration between the Canadian Academy and the broadcasters will involve producing the awards show both on-screen and behind the scenes.
In an effort to boost ratings and adapt to industry disruptions, the Canadian Academy and the CBC have experimented with different formats for the CSAs in recent years. These experiments have included virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pre-taped one-hour specials with segments featuring Canadian celebrities in Los Angeles, and hosting the awards show without a host and focusing on pre-taped comedy skits. The CSAs were consolidated into a single event in 2012, combining the Gemini and Genie award shows. Last year, the CSAs returned to a live format for its 13th edition, with the film "The Apprentice" winning big at the national film and TV awards in Toronto.
The upcoming 2026 Canadian Screen Awards will be hosted by actor and comedian Andrew Phung. Nominations for the awards show will be announced on March 25. The collaboration between CBC, Bell Media, and Corus to broadcast the CSAs reflects a united effort to showcase and celebrate Canadian stories on a national stage. The partnership aims to revitalize the awards show and engage audiences across various platforms.
