Spain's Plan to Grant Residency to Undocumented Immigrants: A Step Towards Integration

Spain is home to over half a million immigrants living without legal permission, often working in jobs that locals avoid. These individuals, known as "sin papeles" or "without papers," face exploitation, marginalization, and invisibility. In response, the Spanish government recently announced plans to grant residency and work permits to immigrants who arrived before December 31, 2025, have resided in Spain for at least five months, and have a clean criminal record. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized the importance of integrating these individuals who have contributed to the country's progress.
