Former Athletes Sue N.C. State University Over Alleged Sexual Abuse and Harassment

A group of former athletes has joined a lawsuit against N.C. State University officials, claiming they were not protected from a trainer's alleged sexual abuse and harassment on campus. The lawsuit, which began in 2022 with former soccer player Benjamin Locke, accuses Debbie Yow and other NC State leaders of failing to prevent sexual abuse and harassment by Robert Murphy, the former director of Sports Medicine and head athletic trainer. The athletes allege that Murphy touched their genitals during massages and engaged in harassing behavior while collecting urine samples for drug testing. The lawsuit claims that the Athletics Department chose to protect Murphy and the institution's reputation by minimizing or covering up his actions.

Robert Murphy resigned in 2022 following Locke's allegations, which prompted a Title IX investigation on campus. Two more former athletes filed similar lawsuits in 2023, and by September 2025, a total of 31 former athletes had joined the legal battle. Murphy has denied the allegations, with his attorney stating that there is no credible evidence to support the claims of assault. Despite the allegations, Murphy has not faced any criminal charges. The university's legal team has contested the accusations, arguing that Murphy's behavior did not warrant an investigation and that those in a position to take action were not informed.

The former athletes involved in the lawsuit are seeking justice for the alleged abuse and harassment they experienced while under Murphy's care at NC State University. The legal battle highlights the importance of holding institutions accountable for protecting their students and athletes from misconduct and ensuring a safe environment for all individuals on campus. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to address issues of sexual abuse and harassment in educational settings and the need for transparency and accountability in handling such cases.
