Rap Masterclass with A$AP Rocky: Inspiring Fourth Graders at a Harlem Elementary School

A$AP Rocky returned to a Harlem elementary school to share his knowledge of rap with Mr. Mayers’ class for the Celebrity Substitute show. The fourth graders were curious about his age, experiences with bullying, and relationship with Rihanna. Rocky emphasized the importance of rap in his life and shared that he learned to rap in the same neighborhood where the school is located.

The students had a crash course in Rap 101, where they learned to create rhymes using their names. Rocky surprised them by setting up a professional recording studio in the school, allowing each student to rap over his beat for the song “Punk Rocky.” He showcased his parenting skills by being patient with the kids and offering them rap tips, even joining in to deliver some bars himself.

Rocky also took on the role of music-video director, helping choreograph the students’ debut visual for the song “IDK,” which was shot in the classroom with a fish-eye lens. The students rapped together, showcasing their skills and creativity in the process. The exchange between Rocky and the students was heartwarming, providing a memorable experience for everyone involved.

The students had a unique opportunity to learn from a successful rapper like A$AP Rocky and showcase their talents in a professional recording setting. Rocky’s Don’t Be Dumb album, released in January, topped the Billboard 200 chart with 123,000 total album units earned. The Celebrity Substitute episode featuring Rocky can be watched for a glimpse into the fun and educational session with the students.
