Unveiling Terrorism: The Case of Elias Rodriguez and the Tragic Attack on Israeli Diplomats

A man accused of killing two Israeli diplomats in Washington, D.C., last year faces new charges of terrorism in an indictment unsealed recently. The indictment includes nine charges, including hate crimes, with some carrying the possibility of a death penalty or life imprisonment. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized that the act was an act of terror, leading to the additional terrorism-related charges.
Elias Rodriguez, 31, allegedly opened fire at people leaving an event for young professionals and diplomats hosted by the American Jewish Committee. He fired around 20 shots from a semi-automatic handgun and shouted "Free Palestine." The victims, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, who worked for Israel’s Embassy in Washington, lost their lives in the attack.
The FBI assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office, Darren B. Cox, revealed that Rodriguez wrote and published a manifesto to justify his actions and incite others to engage in political violence. The shooting, condemned globally, occurred during a period of heightened tension in the United States, including student protests related to the war in Gaza.
The war in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’ attack in October 2023, resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The conflict claimed the lives of at least 1,665 Israelis and foreign nationals, while over 67,000 Palestinians were killed in Gaza between October 7, 2023, and October 7, 2025, according to Gaza health authorities.
