UK Film Industry Hits Record High in 2025: A Look at Production Spending and International Impact

The UK experienced its highest annual spend on movies last year, as reported by the BFI. Feature film production contributed £2.8B in 2025, marking a 31% increase and setting a new record. However, only 7% of this spending was for domestic production, with the majority going towards big Hollywood films like Wuthering Heights, The Beatles – A Four Film Cinematic Event, and Supergirl. Co-production spending also saw a 14% decrease.

In 2025, a total of 193 films were produced in the UK, with the overall production spend reaching £2.8B. Movies accounted for over 40% of the total expenditure on film and high-end TV in the UK, which amounted to £6.8B, the third-highest figure on record. TV spending increased by 17% to $4B, with popular shows like Harry Potter, Slow Horses, and Outlander: Blood of My Blood being filmed.

BFI's Ben Roberts emphasized the significant impact of the UK's film and TV industries on the economy, job creation, and global audience engagement. The UK continues to attract ambitious projects and renowned international talents, showcasing its creativity and technical expertise. Productions led by UK talent, both on and off-camera, highlight the country's skilled crews and appeal to audiences worldwide.
