Expanding CDL Training Programs for Military Members: Grants Support Iowa Community Colleges

Two Iowa community colleges are expanding their commercial driver’s license training programs with funding from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Eastern Iowa Community Colleges and Northeast Iowa Community College have received grants for active military service members, veterans, and their families. EICC received $79,800, while NICC received $74,925.
EICC’s five-week training program aims to quickly transition students into employment while upholding industry safety standards. The grant funding will cover at least 14 students at $5,700 each at EICC, and 15 qualified students will have their tuition fully covered at NICC over the next two years.
The grants awarded to the community colleges are part of a $3.4 million initiative to support U.S. Armed Forces members and prevent crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. NICC’s four-week program boasts a 93% job placement rate, and local demand for trained individuals in this field is expected to increase by nearly 13%.
Dawn Fleming, NICC's assistant director of financial aid and veterans affairs coordinator, emphasized the college's commitment to supporting military members and their families. Martin Hemann, NICC's transportation program developer, highlighted the rewarding career opportunities that come with obtaining a CDL license, including the potential for a good living, independence, and the chance to explore the country.
In conclusion, the grants provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will enable Eastern Iowa Community Colleges and Northeast Iowa Community College to enhance their CDL training programs and support military personnel and their families in transitioning to high-demand civilian careers in the transportation industry.
