Neon Acquires Global Rights to 'Clarissa': A Contemporary Retelling of Virginia Woolf's 'Mrs. Dalloway' with Star-Studded Cast

Neon has secured the global rights to "Clarissa," a contemporary retelling of Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway," featuring a star-studded cast including Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, India Amarteifio, Ayo Edebiri, and Toheeb Jimoh. The film was shot on 35mm film in Nigeria, with Arie and Chuko Esiri co-directing. Neon will handle the U.S. release, while Neon International will manage foreign sales.

"Clarissa" centers around Clarissa, a high-society woman in Lagos, Nigeria, who is preparing to host a party where she reunites with old friends. Throughout the night, they reminisce about their past, delving into complex relationships, love, desires, and aspirations.

Chuko Esiri wrote the script and produced the film alongside Arie Esiri, Theresa Park, and Nicholas Weinstock. Notable co-producers and executive producers include Nina Gold, Thomas Bassett, Sophie Okonedo, and others. The film was financed by Afreximbank Creative Africa Nexus and MBO Capital.

Arie and Chuko Esiri, hailing from Nigeria, gained recognition for their debut feature "Eyimofe (This Is My Desire)," which received critical acclaim and multiple awards. Neon, known for its Oscar-nominated films, has a diverse slate of upcoming releases, including "Sirāt," "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert," "Exit 8," "The Christophers," "I Love Boosters," and "Hokum."

Neon's Director of Acquisitions, Development & Production, Kate Gondwe, finalized the deal for "Clarissa," with UTA Independent Film Group representing the filmmakers. The film promises to be a captivating exploration of relationships and memories, set against the backdrop of a vibrant Nigerian setting.
