From War-Torn Ukraine to the Winter Games: Vadym Kolesnik's Journey to Success

American figure skater Vadym Kolesnik had not seen his family in Ukraine for four years due to the ongoing war and destruction caused by Russian attacks. His father's business was destroyed, and his brother joined the Ukrainian army. Thanks to a successful GoFundMe campaign, Kolesnik's family members were able to travel to Milan to watch him compete in the Winter Games.
Kolesnik, who came to the U.S. in 2016 for training, faced challenges as an immigrant but eventually found success in figure skating. He is grateful for the support that allowed his family to be present at the Olympics. Despite the hardships his family has faced, Kolesnik remains determined to focus on his skating and represent his country on the ice.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has deeply affected Kolesnik, who is against Russian athletes competing in the Milan Cortina Games. He views Russia as a terrorist country and believes they have no place in the competition while the war continues. Kolesnik, who recently obtained U.S. citizenship, has learned to separate his personal struggles from his skating career and uses figure skating as an escape from the harsh realities of war.
While Kolesnik's mother chose to stay in Michigan due to visa concerns, his family members from Ukraine were able to attend the Olympics to support him. Kolesnik's father has always been supportive of his figure skating dreams, and now he has the opportunity to showcase his talent on the world stage. Despite the challenges he has faced, Kolesnik remains focused on his goals and is grateful for the opportunity to compete at the highest level in figure skating.
