In Memory of Fred Smith: The Bassist Behind Blondie and Television

The bassist known for his work with Blondie and Television, Fred Smith, passed away at the age of 77. His death was announced by Television on Instagram, and he reportedly died from cancer in a New York hospital on February 5. Smith initially played with Angel and the Snake, which later evolved into Blondie, before joining Television to replace Richard Hell. Despite leaving Blondie, he continued to collaborate with various bands and musicians, including Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. Smith also ventured into winemaking with his wife, Paula Cereghino, establishing the artisanal winery Cereghino Smith in Bloomington, New York. Born as Fredrick Edward Lefkowitz in Queens in 1948, Smith had a musical upbringing and began playing with notable musicians early in his career. He is survived by his wife and brother.
