VTA Sets New Ridership Record on Super Bowl Sunday: Preparing for FIFA World Cup Success

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority broke its daily light rail ridership record on Super Bowl Sunday, with over 30,000 passengers boarding light rail to attend Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium and related events in the South Bay. This record surpassed the previous record set by Taylor Swift's 2023 concert. VTA officials are optimistic that this success will translate to future events, such as the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches in the region. The agency aims to improve efficiency and enhance passenger experience based on insights gained from special events like the Super Bowl.
VTA had projected 25,000 riders for Super Bowl LX, slightly more than the number of passengers who attended Taylor Swift's concert in 2023. The agency's previous record was set during the NHL Winter Classic in 2015. Approximately 40% of passengers transferred from Caltrain to VTA in Mountain View, while the remaining 60% came from downtown San Jose or transferred from BART in Milpitas. After the game, VTA utilized two nearby stations to expedite the process of getting fans onto trains, successfully accommodating over 13,000 passengers in under 90 minutes.
Campbell City Councilmember Sergio Lopez, who chairs VTA's Board of Directors, emphasized the significance of the new ridership record as a testament to people's trust in VTA for their transportation needs. The success of light rail during the Super Bowl extended beyond Santa Clara, with events across the South Bay drawing passengers who relied on the transit system. VTA is now preparing for the FIFA World Cup matches at Levi’s Stadium, seeking funding to support operational needs during the tournament.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, VTA is confident in its ability to provide efficient service for residents and visitors attending the matches. The agency plans to build on the lessons learned from the Super Bowl, incorporating strategies for wayfinding, communication, and additional service to meet the demands of a multi-day, multi-location event. With a focus on enhancing the passenger experience, VTA aims to continue its success in serving high-demand venues and major events in the Bay Area.
