Power Rangers (2017) Leaving Netflix: A Look Back at the Modern Reboot Starring Dacre Montgomery

A superhero film from 2017 is scheduled to be removed from Netflix next month. Power Rangers, starring Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things, brought the iconic superhero franchise to the big screen after a two-decade hiatus. The movie will no longer be available on Netflix starting Friday, March 6, 2026. It was a modern reboot of the franchise, drawing inspiration from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pilot episode that aired in 1993.
The plot of Power Rangers revolves around a group of students in Angel Grove who stumble upon ancient alien technology in an old mine. Each student acquires a Power Coin, granting them superhuman abilities. They must unite to defeat the villainous Rita Repulsa within a tight deadline to save the planet. The main cast includes Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G, and Elizabeth Banks, with Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader, and David Denman in supporting roles.
Upon its release on March 24, 2017, Power Rangers received mixed reviews, with a 51% Tomatometer score and a 65% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its global box office earnings exceeding $142 million, the film did not meet all expectations. The Power Rangers franchise, known for its TV series, also spawned two '90s movies, comic books, and video games, drawing inspiration from the Japanese franchise Super Sentai.
Before the movie's premiere, producer Haim Saban hinted at a planned "six-movie story arc." Despite talks of a sequel following the first film, the franchise was acquired by Hasbro, Inc. in 2018 for a reported $522 million in cash and stock. Hasbro announced plans for a sequel in 2019, but the project has yet to materialize. The future of the Power Rangers film series remains uncertain, leaving fans eager for updates on any potential sequels or developments.
