Open Cities: Empowering Independent Filmmakers with Ethical AI Tools and Creative Mentorship
Joana Vicente and Jason Kliot, former Sundance CEO and Oscar-nominated producer, have launched a new film accelerator and production company called Open Cities. The company aims to support independent filmmakers globally by providing ethical AI tools, financing, and creative mentorship. With bases in Portugal and New York, Open Cities was founded in collaboration with WarnerMedia executive Tony Gonçalves and Portuguese entrepreneur Filipe de Botton.
Open Cities' inaugural accelerator program will offer script refinement, individual mentorship, and education on various tech tools, including AI programs for pre-visualization, sound editing, and color correction. The program will conclude with an in-person immersive session and pitch day, with a select number of projects receiving financing and production opportunities. The flagship session is scheduled to run from August to November 2026, with submissions opening on March 15, 2026.
Jason Kliot, Open Cities' chief creative officer, emphasized the importance of embracing technological change to empower independent storytellers. Kliot, known for producing acclaimed films like "Capernaum" and "Welcome to the Dollhouse," highlighted the company's mission to enable filmmakers to create bold and ambitious stories that were previously out of reach.
Joana Vicente and Jason Kliot, who are married, bring a wealth of experience in digital filmmaking to Open Cities. Their previous collaborations with filmmakers like Alex Gibney and Steven Soderbergh showcased how new tools could revolutionize the filmmaking process. The company's international advisory group includes industry leaders from film, technology, philanthropy, and creative fields, providing valuable expertise and support.
