Remembering John Shirreffs: A Tribute to a Legendary Southern California Horse Trainer

Renowned Southern California horse trainer John Shirreffs passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 80. Shirreffs, who was born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1945, served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War before embarking on a successful career as a horse trainer. With a patient and horse-centric approach, Shirreffs amassed 596 victories from 3,589 career starts, including training the likes of Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo and champion mare Zenyatta.

In 2005, Shirreffs achieved a remarkable upset when Giacomo won the Kentucky Derby at odds of 50-1, surprising the racing world. He later trained Zenyatta, who made history by becoming the first female horse to defeat males in the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2009. Zenyatta's impressive career under Shirreffs's guidance earned her multiple accolades, including champion older dirt female honors for three consecutive years (2008-2010) and Horse of the Year in 2010.

Shirreffs's success extended beyond Zenyatta and Giacomo, as he also trained Life Is Sweet to victory in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic on the same card as Zenyatta's Classic win. Even in his later years, Shirreffs remained competitive in the racing world, with horses like Baeza finishing third in the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and Westwood winning the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) in his final start as a trainer on January 31.

In memory of John Shirreffs, the racing community mourns the loss of a legendary trainer whose dedication to his horses and remarkable achievements will forever be remembered and celebrated.
