Netflix's Terminator Series 'Terminator Zero' Canceled After One Season: Inside the Rise and Fall of the Futuristic AI Drama

Netflix's Terminator series, Terminator Zero, has been canceled by the streaming service after just one season. The show, which debuted on August 29, 2024, was an original story set in the iconic Terminator franchise but did not feature characters like the T-800. Despite receiving positive reviews from both critics and audiences, the viewership numbers were not enough to secure a second season.
Creator Mattson Tomlin confirmed the cancellation of Terminator Zero on X, expressing disappointment that the planned Future War storyline for seasons 2 and 3 will not come to fruition. The show followed the story of scientist Malcolm Lee creating a new AI named Kokoro in 1997 Tokyo to combat Skynet, with a cast that included Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson, and André Holland.
Critics praised Terminator Zero for its fresh take on the Terminator franchise, with a high 87% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a respectable 79% audience score. Despite having scripts ready for season 2 and outlines for season 3, Tomlin revealed that the show's high production costs and low viewership led to its cancellation. While Netflix offered to wrap up the story with a few additional episodes, Tomlin declined, stating that Terminator Zero needed more than just a few episodes to conclude its narrative.
