Charlie's Angels Franchise: A New Chapter in the Making

The iconic Charlie’s Angels franchise is making a comeback with a fourth movie currently in development. Screenwriter Pete Chiarelli, known for his work on "Crazy Rich Asians" and "The Proposal," is set to write the script for the upcoming film. The release date for the new Charlie’s Angels movie has not been announced yet. Flower Films, Drew Barrymore’s production company, is co-producing the film. Barrymore previously starred in the 2000s remake of Charlie’s Angels.

The original Charlie’s Angels franchise was based on a female-led action TV series that aired from 1976 to 1981, featuring Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson. The franchise was later adapted into a film in 2000, starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore. This was followed by a sequel, "Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle," in 2003. In 2019, the franchise was reimagined with Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott in the lead roles, directed by Elizabeth Banks.

Despite the 2019 film receiving mixed reviews and underperforming at the box office, Elizabeth Banks defended the movie, attributing its reception to sexism in Hollywood. She emphasized the importance of women having their own action franchises and challenged the industry's stereotypes. Banks acknowledged the need for the film to be successful financially to break the notion that men are not interested in watching women-led action movies. The future of the Charlie’s Angels franchise remains promising as it continues to evolve and empower female representation in the action genre.
