Escalating Violence in Niger State: Urgent Calls for Action

A recent wave of violence in northwest Nigeria's Niger State has left at least 30 people dead and numerous houses and shops burned down in three villages near the border with Benin Republic. The attacks, carried out by armed assailants on motorbikes, are believed to be the work of bandits responsible for a series of deadly assaults, abductions, and displacements in the region. The Nigerian government is facing increasing pressure to address the escalating insecurity in the country.

According to residents who managed to escape the violence, the assailants targeted villages in the Borgu Local Government Area, with one police spokesperson confirming the attack on Tunga-Makeri village where six people were killed, houses were set on fire, and several individuals were abducted. The attackers then moved on to Konkoso village, where eyewitnesses reported at least 26 fatalities and the destruction of the local police station.

Witnesses described the attackers arriving on more than 200 motorbikes, unleashing gunfire and causing widespread panic among the villagers. The violence began in the early hours of the morning, with residents hearing military jets flying overhead as the assailants carried out their brutal assault. Many villagers are now too afraid to return to their homes, fearing further attacks by the armed groups.
