Exploring Bormio: A Winter Olympics Experience in the Italian Alps

My trip to Milan involved a long layover in Paris due to a sold-out flight. Despite my efforts to switch to an earlier flight, I had to stick to my original plan. Upon arrival in Milan, I faced limited transportation options to reach Bormio in the Italian Alps. Opting for a rental car saved me time and provided flexibility for my late-night arrival.

The drive to Bormio was scenic, although I could only appreciate it in the dark. Bormio has a modern and historic side, with Old Town showcasing its ancient charm. The town was surprisingly quiet during my visit, with many establishments closed for the afternoon siesta. Despite the lack of crowds, I enjoyed exploring the picturesque streets and dining at local restaurants.

The following day, I savored a delicious breakfast at Hotel Meuble Cima Bianca before exploring the Stelvio Race Course base. Old Town's car-free streets made it easy to wander around and soak in the historic atmosphere. However, the town seemed quieter than expected, with limited activity during the afternoon hours. I dined at a cozy pizza restaurant in the evening, where I met a couple who shared their observations about the town's subdued ambiance compared to other Olympic host cities.

The couple had visited Livigno, a livelier destination hosting freestyle skiing and snowboarding events, which contrasted with Bormio's more subdued atmosphere. The spread-out nature of Olympic events across Italy posed logistical challenges and potentially diluted the overall fan experience. Despite the gaps between men's alpine events in Bormio, the town's charm and scenic beauty deserved more attention and energy during the Winter Olympics.

On the day of the men's super-G event, I witnessed an exciting competition with four American athletes participating. Ryan Cochran-Siegle secured a silver medal, showcasing Team USA's success in the event. The warm weather and course conditions favored early racers, adding to the competitive spirit of the race. Overall, my experience in Bormio highlighted the town's unique blend of history, tranquility, and sporting excitement during the Winter Olympics.
