Matchmakers Global South Lab: Bridging Borders in Film Co-Production

DreamCoat Films and Mairare, UK production companies, have selected 10 feature projects for the inaugural Matchmakers Global South Lab. The lab aims to support UK-based producers seeking co-production opportunities with countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The selected producers will participate in sessions led by industry experts from the UK and the Global South, including the National Film and Television School. The lab is also supported by the British Council and Projeto Paradiso, a Brazilian philanthropic organization.
The lab features production masterclass sessions by industry veterans Maria Carlota Bruno and Agustina Llambi-Campbell. Mentors like Emily Morgan and Karim Ainouz are also part of the program. The selected projects include three aimed at co-production with Latin America, five with Africa, and two with the Caribbean. Additionally, a Brazilian project has been chosen by Projeto Paradiso.
Among the selected projects is "If That’s What You Say" by producer James Watson of Bêtes Sauvages. The film follows a French actress researching her role as a transgender hero in Rio de Janeiro. Another project, "Fields" by Lunar Pictures producer Danielle Goff, explores Pastor Mimi's encounter with an otherworldly threat after a death in her community on the Fields estate. These projects aim for co-production with Latin America and Africa, respectively.
The participants were chosen by a jury comprising industry professionals like Chiara Giavarini, Rasha Hosny, Mo Harawe, and Julia Breta. The co-founders of Matchmakers, Joseph a. Adesunloye and Luiza Paiva, emphasize the importance of supporting producers in international co-productions and fostering collaboration across regions.
The selected projects for the Matchmakers Global South Lab include a diverse range of stories and voices, reflecting cultural authenticity and international appeal. The lab aims to empower producers to create projects that resonate globally and showcase a variety of perspectives. The participants are set to benefit from the expertise and guidance provided by industry mentors and experts throughout the program.
