Exploring the King: Baz Luhrmann's New Stage Musical and EPiC Documentary on Elvis Presley

Baz Luhrmann has revealed that he is currently working on a new stage musical centered around the life and career of Elvis Presley. The Australian director, known for his recent biopic Elvis and EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert film, shared this exciting news during an interview on Magic Radio. While Luhrmann will be leading the project, he mentioned that he will be taking a more hands-off approach, similar to how he entrusted Alex Timbers with the Moulin Rouge! film adaptation in 2001.
Following the success of the 2022 biopic Elvis, which received eight Academy Award nominations, Luhrmann hinted at releasing a four-hour director's cut version and produced the concert documentary EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert. This film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, showcases Presley's 1970 Las Vegas residency and features narration from the King himself using rediscovered audio recordings.
EPiC is set for an IMAX release on February 20, followed by a wider cinema release. The soundtrack, released by Sony and RCA Records, includes remixes of classic live performances and new mixes, offering a fresh take on Presley's iconic music catalog. Luhrmann expressed his goal of creating something unique in the Elvis canon with EPiC, aiming to provide deeper insights into Presley's humanity and inner life.
The first trailer for EPiC captures intimate moments of Presley preparing for a show, highlighting the King's performance ritual. This project, along with the upcoming stage musical, showcases Luhrmann's commitment to honoring the enduring legacy of Elvis Presley.
