John Lennon's Rock 'N' Roll Journey: From Abbey Road to Nostalgic Tribute

The origins of Rock ‘N’ Roll can be traced back to 1969 when John Lennon composed a song for the Beatles’ Abbey Road album. This song, “Come Together,” led to a copyright infringement lawsuit by music publisher Morris Levy, which was settled out of court with an agreement for John to record three songs by Levy’s company on his next album. This led to the creation of an album of rock ‘n’ roll covers.

During his “Lost Weekend” in Los Angeles, John Lennon worked on the Rock ‘N’ Roll album with producer Phil Spector. The songs chosen for the album reflected John’s musical roots from his pre-Beatles days and the band’s early performances in Hamburg and Liverpool.

The Rock ‘N’ Roll sessions began in October 1973 in Los Angeles and featured a lineup of talented musicians. However, the sessions were chaotic, with Spector’s eccentric behavior causing challenges. The situation worsened when Spector disappeared with the tapes after a car accident.

John returned to New York City in 1974 without the master tapes and began recording Walls and Bridges, leading to legal issues with Levy. The LA master tapes were eventually recovered, and John completed the Rock ‘N’ Roll album in New York with the musicians from Walls and Bridges.

The album features covers of classic rock ‘n’ roll songs that influenced John Lennon, including tracks by Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, and Ben E. King. John’s respect for these songs is evident in his heartfelt renditions, making the album a nostalgic tribute to his musical influences.

Released in February 1975, Rock ‘N’ Roll reached No.6 on both the UK and US album charts. The single “Stand by Me” also achieved chart success. Following the album’s release, John Lennon reunited with Yoko Ono and embraced a new phase of domestic life in New York City.

John Lennon’s Rock ‘N’ Roll album captures the essence of his musical roots and pays homage to the rock ‘n’ roll era that shaped his career. The album stands as a testament to John’s love for the music that inspired him and continues to resonate with fans of classic rock ‘n’ roll.
