Remembering Billy Steinberg: A Tribute to a Songwriting Legend

Renowned songwriter Billy Steinberg, known for his chart-topping hits in the 1980s and 1990s, has passed away at the age of 74 after battling cancer. Alongside his songwriting partner Tom Kelly, Steinberg penned numerous major hits for various artists during his career.

One of Steinberg's notable compositions was the pop ballad "I'll Stand By You," which became a Top-20 hit for The Pretenders in 1994. Following his passing, Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde paid tribute to Steinberg on social media, reminiscing about their collaborative songwriting sessions in Los Angeles and London.

"I'll Stand By You" was featured on The Pretenders' album "Last of the Independents" and peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song remains one of the band's last tracks to enter the Top 40 of the chart.

Steinberg, along with Hynde and Kelly, co-wrote several songs that appeared on The Pretenders' albums, including "Night In My Veins" from "Last Of The Independents" and tracks from the albums "¡Viva El Amor!" and "Loose Screw."

With Kelly, Steinberg achieved great success in the 1980s, co-writing five songs that topped the Hot 100 chart, including hits for Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston, Heart, and The Bangles. His songwriting prowess earned him induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Sony Music Publishing also paid tribute to Steinberg, acknowledging his ability to capture complex emotions and create unforgettable melodies that resonate with audiences. Steinberg's legacy as a talented and honest songwriter will continue to inspire music lovers for years to come.
