Remembering Doug Moe: A Tribute to the Legendary Denver Nuggets Coach
The basketball world mourns the loss of former Denver Nuggets Head Coach Doug Moe, who passed away at the age of 87 in San Antonio. Bill Hanzlik, one of his former players, shared that Moe passed peacefully with his wife Jane by his side. Moe coached the Nuggets from 1980 to 1990, achieving 432 wins, a record that stood for 34 years until Michael Malone surpassed it in 2024. During his tenure, the Nuggets made it to the playoffs 9 times, and Moe was honored with the NBA Coach of the Year award in 1988.
Known for his unique coaching style, Moe was a beloved figure in the NBA. He affectionately referred to opponents and his own players as "Stiffs" and was recognized for his casual appearance on the sidelines. Surprisingly, Moe's Nuggets team did not run any designed plays but still led the league in scoring 6 times. Moe's coaching career concluded with 628 wins, ranking him 19th in NBA history.
In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Moe was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, the New York City Hall of Fame in 1998, and received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. His legacy as a coach and character in the NBA will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
