The Voice of Hind Rajab: A Film of Resilience and Redemption

Sixteen weeks after a tragic event in Gaza City, a little girl named Hind Rajab found herself in a harrowing situation, pleading for help over the phone to volunteers at the Palestine Red Crescent Emergency Call Center. Filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania was deeply moved by Hind's voice and decided to create a movie based on her story, setting aside her previous project to focus on this important narrative. Through the film "The Voice of Hind Rajab," Ben Hania aimed to give a voice to Hind and shed light on the experiences of those involved in the emergency response.

To bring Hind's story to life, Ben Hania visualized her voice as digital sound waves that dominate the screen, emphasizing the importance of Hind's words. The film explores the perspectives of the Red Crescent dispatchers who received Hind's call, highlighting their crucial role in the unfolding events. Through extensive research and collaboration with real-life emergency responders, Ben Hania crafted a script that captured the tension and urgency of the situation.

The casting process for the film involved finding actors whose personalities matched those of the Red Crescent responders, without revealing the full details of the project. The actors were asked to improvise scenes to gauge their suitability for the roles, ensuring an authentic portrayal of the characters. Despite initial reservations from some actors about the sensitive subject matter, they were ultimately moved by the script and committed to telling Hind's story.

As filming commenced in Tunisia, the cast and crew were deeply affected by the emotional intensity of the scenes. Hearing Hind's voice for the first time during filming added a layer of realism and emotion to their performances, resulting in raw and powerful portrayals on screen. The reenactment of Hind's ordeal took a toll on the actors, with some experiencing physical and emotional distress during filming.

In addition to depicting the tense emergency call, the film includes an epilogue that reveals Hind's tragic fate, providing a poignant conclusion to her story. The premiere of "The Voice of Hind Rajab" at the Venice Film Festival was met with a heartfelt response from the audience, reflecting the impact of the film's powerful storytelling. Ben Hania's hope is that the film will amplify Hind's voice and resonate with audiences around the world, ensuring that her story is heard and remembered.
