Repeat Offender Stabs 13-Year-Old Boy in Neck: A Wake-Up Call for Community Safety

A man identified as Jermaine Long, a repeat offender, allegedly stabbed a 13-year-old boy in the neck on Valentine's Day in Volusia County, Florida. The incident occurred on the Daytona Beach Boardwalk as the Clarke family was returning to their hotel. The boy, Sullivan, narrowly escaped a fatal injury as the blade missed critical areas in his neck. Long, described as a homeless man, used a box cutter for the attack and had a history of multiple arrests since 2022, including charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and failure to register as a sex offender.
The boy's mother witnessed the attack and initially thought it was a robbery attempt. Sullivan believes that his life was spared because he turned his neck at the right moment. Long was released from custody just four days before the stabbing incident. The Daytona Beach Police Department Chief addressed concerns about over-policing in minority communities, emphasizing that their enforcement efforts are based on behavior rather than race or ethnicity.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office did not provide a comment on the incident. The attack has raised questions about the handling of repeat offenders and the safety of communities in the area. The Clarke family's harrowing experience serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing criminal behavior effectively to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
