BMW M: The Future of Performance - A Look at the Upcoming Models and Innovations
BMW M has come a long way since its inception, expanding its lineup from just a few models to nearly every model receiving the M treatment. The company is gearing up to introduce a slew of new and redesigned models by 2029, with plans to offer up to 30 models, including both M and M Performance vehicles. BMW is set to launch its first-ever full electric M3 model, signaling a potential shift towards electrification while still catering to its traditional audience with fuel-fed models.
Despite the push towards electrification, BMW M remains committed to building ICE-powered models, particularly those with six-cylinder inline engines and V8 engines. The brand plans to continue offering manual transmissions as long as there is demand, but the future of manuals may be uncertain due to the challenges of developing new gearboxes. The introduction of plug-in hybrid M models could potentially impact the availability of manual transmissions in the future.
The upcoming lineup of BMW M models includes the all-electric M3 and a plug-in hybrid version, with the possibility of the next-gen M3 retaining a Touring body style. The 4 Series will also receive an M version, along with M Performance models across various segments. The M5 and M5 Touring will adopt the Neue Klasse look, while the 7 Series and i7 will receive M Performance versions. Additionally, a new generation of the i4 M60 is expected, along with special limited-run models like the Skytop, hinting at potential homages to iconic models like the M1.
