U2's Days of Ash: A Politically Charged EP Reflecting Global Challenges

U2 has released a new politically charged extended play (EP) titled Days of Ash, surprising fans with a standalone six-track project. The EP, released on Ash Wednesday, features five new songs and a poem by Israeli author/poet Yehuda Amichai, read by Nigerian artist Adeola of Les Amazones d'Afrique. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. stated that the songs on Days of Ash have a different mood and theme compared to their upcoming 16th studio album, with themes of defiance, dismay, and lamentation.

The opening track, American Obituary, reflects on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the U.S. and the fatal shooting of Renée Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. Song of the Future honors the life of Sarina Esmailzadeh, a 16-year-old Iranian girl allegedly beaten to death at a protest, while One Life At A Time is dedicated to Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian father killed in the West Bank. Yours Eternally features Ed Sheeran and Ukrainian musician-turned-soldier, Taras Topolia, inspired by the bold spirit of Ukraine.

The EP is accompanied by the return of Propaganda, a digital magazine first published by U2 around 40 years ago. The band's decision to release Days of Ash and the themes explored in the songs reflect the current global challenges and the need to stand up against injustice and uncertainty.
