Nor'easter Alert: Heavy Snow, Blizzard Conditions, and Coastal Flooding Expected in Massachusetts

A powerful nor’easter is expected to impact the region late on Sunday through Monday, bringing heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions in some areas. The storm was initially projected to miss the region, but forecast models shifted on Friday, indicating a closer approach to Massachusetts. The Cape and Islands, along with the South Coast and South Shore, are likely to experience the brunt of the storm, with over a foot of snow possible in southeastern parts of the state. Strong winds and coastal flooding are also anticipated.

Boston could see more than 6 inches of snow from Sunday night through Monday, with AccuWeather predicting 4 to 8 inches for the area and up to 12 inches for the Cape and Islands. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40 to 50 mph, creating blizzard-like conditions. The Monday morning commute is likely to be significantly impacted, with poor travel conditions expected.

The snow is forecasted to begin Sunday night, peak on Monday morning, and taper off later in the day. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Cape, Islands, and South Coast, warning of potential whiteout conditions that could make travel treacherous and life-threatening. Meteorologists are monitoring the storm's northwest shift, which may necessitate expanding the watch to include more of eastern Massachusetts.

In addition to heavy snow, strong winds exceeding 50 mph are expected on Cape Cod and the Islands, posing a risk of downed trees and power lines. High Wind Watches and Storm Watches have been issued for the region, with mariners advised to take precautions due to hazardous conditions at sea. Coastal flooding is also a concern, with high astronomical tides on Monday and Tuesday potentially causing minor to moderate flooding along the eastern Massachusetts coast.

The surge models indicate a 3-foot surge around high tide early Monday and Tuesday mornings, with water levels rising over 6 feet in Nantucket Harbor and 13.5 feet in Boston. Road closures, debris on coastal roads, property inundation, and beach erosion are likely outcomes. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to protect flood-prone property and avoid driving through flooded areas. Stay updated on the latest forecasts and heed warnings from local authorities to ensure safety during the storm.
