VanRootelsar tragically took the lives of eight individuals, including family members and students at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, before taking her own life. OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, expressed condolences for the Tumbler Ridge tragedy and cooperated with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police by providing information on the individual's use of ChatGPT.
Upon identifying the account associated with VanRootelsar, ChatGPT banned it for violating usage policies. While the company considered involving law enforcement, they determined that the account's activity did not pose an imminent and credible risk of serious physical harm to others. Following the incident, online platforms YouTube and Roblox took action regarding VanRootelsar's online presence. YouTube removed a channel linked to the suspect in line with their Creator Responsibility Guidelines, while Roblox deleted the user account and associated content connected to the tragic event. Both platforms expressed their commitment to supporting law enforcement in the investigation. The user's account and content were removed from Roblox on Feb. 11, 2026.
