Interstate 81 Winter Storm Vehicle Restrictions: What You Need to Know

Prepare for travel impacts on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County as vehicle restrictions will be in place ahead of an upcoming winter storm. Starting at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 22, Tier 1 restrictions will apply to various major roadways, including the entire length of I-81. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall, with rates of ¾ inch to 1½ inches per hour, creating hazardous driving conditions, especially on elevated areas and mountain grades of I-81.
During Tier 1 restrictions, certain vehicles will not be allowed on I-81, including motorcycles, RVs, and passenger vehicles towing trailers. Speed limits may be reduced to 45 mph for all vehicles, with commercial vehicles required to stay in the right lane. PennDOT will monitor road conditions and adjust restrictions accordingly, lifting them as soon as it is safe to do so.
Apart from I-81, Tier 1 restrictions will affect parts or all of Interstates 76, 78, 80, 83, 84, 95, 283, 295, 380, 476, 676, Route 33, U.S. 22, and various segments of the Pennsylvania Turnpike system.
