Rivian R1 Software Update 2026.03: Apple Watch Integration and Drive Mode Enhancements

Rivian has recently rolled out software version 2026.03 for its R1 models, bringing new features and improvements. One of the key updates is the integration of Apple Watch functionality, allowing owners to control certain vehicle functions directly from their smartwatch. This feature is available for both first- and second-generation R1 models, with different capabilities based on the model year.

In addition to the Apple Watch integration, the update includes enhancements to drive modes. Sport Mode has been expanded to base dual-motor models, allowing owners to enjoy sharper responsiveness without the suspension automatically lowering. This change caters to those who prefer a higher ride height while driving in Sport Mode.

Launch Mode, Rivian's version of launch control, is now available on Gen 1 quad-motor models and dual-motor Performance variants from both generations. To activate Launch Mode, drivers need to select Sport Mode, tap the flag icon, and hold the brake and accelerator simultaneously for an exhilarating driving experience.

Furthermore, a new ‘Lower' setting has been introduced within Kneel Mode, enabling R1 models to drop by an additional inch on average for easier entry and exit. This adjustment is particularly beneficial for the R1T and R1S, which are comparable in size to the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Other notable updates in version 2026.03 include a cold-weather indicator to monitor energy usage for battery warming and increased flexibility in adjusting Drive Modes and settings while certain driver assistance features are engaged. These updates aim to enhance the overall driving experience and bridge the gap between the first and second-generation R1 models.

Looking ahead, Rivian is gearing up for the launch of the R2, a smaller and more affordable electric vehicle expected to compete in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y. Priced around $45,000, the R2 is positioned to be a potential volume seller for the brand, signaling Rivian's continued growth and innovation in the EV market.
