Sad Girlz Wins Crystal Bear at Berlin International Film Festival: A Powerful Story of Friendship and Resilience

Sad Girlz (Chicas Tristes) has been awarded the Crystal Bear for best film in the Generation 14plus category at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film, directed by Fernanda Tovar, tells the story of two 16-year-old swimmers, Paula and La Maestra, as they navigate friendship and the aftermath of a traumatic incident. The film impressed both the international Generation jury and the youth jury with its powerful storytelling and performances.
The international jury praised Sad Girlz for its metaphorical underwater imagery and outstanding lead performances, highlighting its exploration of sexual violence and the complex dynamics between the two young women. The youth jury also commended the film for its emotional depth, strong character relationships, and visual storytelling that draws viewers into the narrative.
In addition to Sad Girlz, the jury also recognized other outstanding films in the Generation 14plus section. Matapanki, a Chilean fantasy drama by director Diego “Mapache” Fuentes, received a special mention for its vibrant and rebellious storytelling. A Family, a Dutch drama by Mees Peijnenburg, was also acknowledged by the youth jury for its portrayal of a custody battle from the perspective of the children involved.
The Generation 14plus section showcased a diverse range of films that resonated with both the international jury and the youth jury, highlighting the talent and creativity of emerging filmmakers. Sad Girlz stood out for its poignant storytelling and performances, earning it the prestigious Crystal Bear award.
