San Jose Earthquakes Await Timo Werner's Debut in 2026 MLS Season Opener

The San Jose Earthquakes are gearing up for the start of their 2026 MLS season, with a match against Sporting KC at PayPal Park on February 21. However, the team will be missing their new striker, Timo Werner, in the season opener. Following a disappointing 2025 MLS campaign, where they finished 10th in the Western Conference, the Quakes made a move to bolster their attack by signing the 29-year-old striker from RB Leipzig on a free transfer. Werner joined the team as a designated player on a two-year contract until June 2028.

Head Coach Bruce Arena has expressed high expectations for Werner, emphasizing his potential to be a valuable addition to the team and the league. Despite Werner's arrival almost a month ago, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see him in action due to visa complications. Arena confirmed in an interview that Werner's delay is not related to any injury but rather an administrative issue regarding his visa.

Arena mentioned that the club is actively working to resolve the visa matter and anticipates Werner's arrival in San Jose over the weekend or early next week. The Quakes are hopeful that Werner will be able to make his debut in the second week of the season against Atlanta United at PayPal Park on February 28.
