Exploring Cambodia's Beer Industry: A Documentary on Dreams, Activism, and Aspirations

CAT&Docs, a Paris-based sales outfit, has acquired the worldwide sales rights for Laurits Nansen’s documentary, Cambodian Beer Dreams. The film is set to make its debut at Denmark’s CPH:DOX festival in the competitive F:Act award section. Cambodian Beer Dreams delves into the intense competition within Cambodia's booming beer market, the efforts of an activist pushing for the enforcement of a neglected national alcohol law, and the aspirations of ordinary Cambodians who see the beer industry as a pathway to a brighter future. Produced by Malene Flindt Pedersen and Signe Skov Thomsen for Denmark’s Hansen & Pedersen, the film received support from the Danish Film Institute, FilmFyn, and DR. Nansen, known for his work on documentary mini-series Welcome To The Frontline and TV feature documentary The Town Where Children Disappear, aims to present a multifaceted view of how Cambodia's beer culture impacts individuals in various ways. The film seeks to shed light on the complexities of people's lives intertwined with the country's beer industry, prompting viewers to contemplate the consequences of unchecked alcohol consumption and powerful market dynamics.
