Sean Baker: From 'Greg the Bunny' to Oscar-Winning Director

Sean Baker, a talented director, has made a name for himself in Hollywood with his unique and innovative films. His work on movies like "Tangerine," shot with an iPhone, and "The Florida Project" showcased his ability to find humor in tragedy. However, it was his 2024 film "Anora" that truly solidified his reputation, winning the prestigious Best Picture award at the Oscars. Before his success in the film industry, Baker co-created a quirky sitcom called "Greg the Bunny" with his friends Spencer Chinoy and Dan Milano.

"Greg the Bunny" aired on Fox in 2002 and followed the adventures of a puppet named Greg living in a world where puppets coexist with humans. The show centered around Greg's job on a children's program called "Sweetknuckle Junction," where he worked alongside his human friend Jimmy Bender, played by Seth Green, and the show's producer, Gil Bender, played by Eugene Levy. Despite having a promising cast and concept, the show was short-lived and only lasted for one season on Fox.

The character of Greg the Bunny originated from a public access show called "Junktape" that Baker, Chinoy, and Milano created earlier. The success of this character led to a series of shorts on IFC titled "The Greg the Bunny Show" in 1998, which eventually paved the way for the Fox sitcom. Even after the show's cancellation, IFC brought back Greg the Bunny for a new series of shorts in 2005, where the character spoofed popular movies.

In an interview with Probot Animation in 2006, Baker discussed the origins of "Greg the Bunny" and his aspirations to create a movie based on the character. While the movie never came to fruition, Baker expressed his desire to continue making feature films and achieve success in the film industry. His dedication to storytelling and filmmaking eventually paid off, leading to his success as a director in Hollywood.
