Gophers Women's Basketball Falls to Michigan State in Final Regular-Season Home Game

The Gopher women’s basketball team played their final regular-season home game at Williams Arena, facing off against the 18th-ranked Michigan State Spartans. Despite a strong performance by Tori McKinney, who scored a career-high 29 points, the team struggled to maintain their balanced offensive attack. The Spartans went on a 16-1 run in the third quarter, ultimately defeating the Gophers 75-61 and ending Minnesota’s nine-game winning streak.
The Gophers shot just 33.3% from the field, with McKinney shouldering much of the scoring load. Players like Amaya Battle and Sophie Hart contributed, but Mara Braun and Grace Grocholski struggled to find their rhythm. The team's inability to convert near the rim and Michigan State's aggressive defense proved to be significant factors in the outcome of the game.
Despite the loss, the Gophers remain focused on their upcoming games and the possibility of competing in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Dawn Plitzuweit emphasized the need to control what they can on the court and stay focused on their opponents. The team recognizes the importance of learning and growing from this experience as they prepare for their next game against Illinois.
As the regular season comes to a close, the Gophers will look to regroup and refocus on their strengths. Seniors Battle and Hart, along with graduate transfers Bershers, Glenn, and Tonga, were honored during Senior Night. The team will use the upcoming week to rest and prepare for their final regular-season game against Illinois, aiming to finish strong and carry their momentum into the postseason.
